Bedtime Stories

This painting was one of the first that I completed after a Ted Nuttall workshop. I took several workshops with Ted and admire his work, he seems to capture the inner person in his portraits. I painted this from a photo I took of my grandson while he was visiting one Christmas, although he was barely talking he took his bedtime stories very seriously Ted has a web page at http://www.tednuttall.com/

Although I generally work in watercolors I started with oils and acrylics. This oil I did plein aire near Phoenix. The big difference between oil and watercolor is with oils you lay in a dark foundation then build up your lights, in watercolor you work to save your whites and build your darks. Most of the workshops I have attended for oils always note at some point that a watercolorists is among them. Just too anxious to lay in the highlights.

Loved this little market in Guadalupe Az.  They had the best fresh vegetables and roasted  Hatch peppers in season.   made weekly stops to fill up on veggies and other goodies.   Guadalupe is well-known around Phoenix as the place to go for a salsa break

This painting of one of my grandsons was inspired by a photo taken during a visit one summer when he was about four. He spent hours on the patio with his crayons depicting his impression of summer at grandmas
